Music of DRUMMING CELLIST is inspired by different mythological stories (Greco-Roman, Slavic). ZABUČALE GORE is the result of a two-year research project studying Slovenian folk
music and mythology, and a quest for Slovenian identity.
"My idea was to re-compose the music, seeking inspiration in any element that I found interesting: the gritty sound of vocals from the old wax-cylinder recordings, non-tempered quarter-tone tuning, the stories told by the lyrics, mystical customs of Slovene pre-Christian faith... Sometimes the original melody would remain intact, but other times all that survived was an atmosphere inspired
by what I believed was the essence of the song."

When you tackle folk music as a composer, you inevitably ask yourself “why?”; why would you change, take away or add to something that is already complete? I found the answer in how I see life, which for me is a mirror to the music. As my late great teacher Ralph Peterson Jr. said: “The only way to know who we are is to look with one eye into the past and the other into the future.” These two points give meaning to the present: the roots of our ancestors, and the creativity of our individual path forward. Folklore is a living thing, continuously transforming while being passed down from generation to generation.
It becomes more valuable if we can rediscover its meaning through our personal kaleidoscope. And that meaning slowly but surely turns into the singing again.
Let it be songs full of sparks for light.
